Crab Nebula (1999)

This newly processed image comes from data originally captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 1999 and 2000. The color assignments in this image have been matched to those used in the new 2024 data, providing a better comparison. Hubble received a new imaging instrument in 2009, the Wide Field Camera 3.

About the colours

This image was acquired by the WFPC2 instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. The color results from assigning different hues (colors) to a monochromatic (grayscale) image. In this case, the assigned colors are: Blue: F502N, Cyan: F547M, Green: F631N, Red: F673N

About the data

The Hubble image was created from HST data from proposal 8222 (J. Hester)
